The AFL Coaches Association (AFLCA) is set to introduce a new award, the Best Defensive Player, recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of defenders in the Australian Football League (AFL). He stated that the coaches' votes, which determine the Champion Player of the Year, are now being expanded to include the Best Defensive Player. The initial pilot program, where coaches voted on the best defensive player, received positive feedback. The category is broad, encompassing various defensive actions such as effective tackles, spoils, stopping opponents, intercept marks, and defensive running patterns. This year, the AFLCA plans to formalize the process, with coaches voting for two players in each game, and the final results will be announced at the All-Australian awards.
Several players are already in the running for the inaugural Best Defensive Player award. These include Tom McCartin, Daniel Turner, Callum Wilkie, Ryan Lester, Harris Andrews, Oisin Mullin, and Connor O'Sullivan. Nicholson noted that these players have consistently received solid votes from coaches, recognizing their significant contributions to their teams' defensive efforts.
